The accident occurred on the busy Verrazano-Narrows Bridge during heavy traffic. Our client, a 34-year-old passenger with no prior injury history, was riding in his employer’s box truck, which was at a standstill when it was first struck from behind by an 18-wheeler traveling approximately 20 mph, carrying a load weighing roughly 25,000 pounds. Shortly after, the box truck was also struck from behind by a four-door sedan. The force of these impacts caused severe injuries to our client.
Emergency Medical Services transported him to NYU Langone Brooklyn, where he was treated and discharged with pain medication and muscle relaxants. Despite initial treatment, our client continued to experience debilitating pain in his neck, back, and right knee — pain that significantly affected his quality of life and ability to work. Determined to find relief, he sought ongoing care with medical providers for over four years following the crash.
His injuries were severe and complex. Among his diagnoses was post-concussion syndrome, a condition often misunderstood yet profoundly impactful. To address his worsening lumbar issues, he underwent a lumbar fusion surgery, followed by a revision surgery to remove the fusion hardware years later. Additionally, he required a right knee arthroscopy to repair tears sustained in the accident.
