What Drivers Need to Know About NYC Traffic During Trick-or-Streets
New York City, NY — NYC Trick-or-Streets is returning for its fifth year, bringing Halloween and fall activities to car-free streets, Open Streets, plazas, and other pedestrian-friendly spaces throughout New York City during October.
While Trick-or-Streets creates designated spaces for pedestrians, the larger Halloween season can also change normal traffic patterns. Drivers may encounter temporary street closures, larger crowds, children crossing streets, parked vehicles near events, and pedestrians moving between neighborhoods and celebrations.
For New Yorkers injured in a car accident this October, Shulman & Hill Injury Lawyers provides legal guidance to help injured individuals understand their rights and options.
Temporary Street Closures Can Change Traffic Patterns
Trick-or-Streets events take place on streets and public spaces throughout the five boroughs. Some locations will be closed to vehicle traffic for scheduled events, while others may operate as Open Streets or plazas.
NYC DOT’s 2026 event list includes locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Several larger events are scheduled for October 22 through Halloween, including celebrations at Hillel Plaza in Brooklyn, Water Street Open Street on Staten Island, Austin Street in Queens, Canal Street in Manhattan, and James Baldwin Plaza in the Bronx.
Drivers should check planned street closures before traveling through areas hosting Halloween events. They should also be prepared for temporary detours and heavier pedestrian activity near event locations.
Children and Pedestrians May Be More Difficult to See
Halloween presents some unique challenges for drivers. Children may be distracted by costumes, candy, decorations, or groups of other pedestrians. Costumes can also make it more difficult for drivers to identify a child’s movements, particularly after dark.
Shulman & Hill advise drivers to look for pedestrians and cyclists at all times, yield to pedestrians and cyclists, and approach intersections and crosswalks carefully. The personal injury law firm also recommends slowing down and traveling at a safe speed.
Drivers Should Slow Down Near Crosswalks and Intersections
A driver approaching a Trick-or-Streets event should expect more people on foot than usual. This is particularly important near crosswalks, intersections, schools, parks, and streets leading to event locations.
Car accident lawyers recommend a safe turning speed of about 5 mph and remind drivers to expect pedestrians in the crosswalk when turning. The city’s street safety guidance also states that New York City’s general speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted.
Taking a few extra seconds to scan the roadway before moving through an intersection can help a driver recognize pedestrians who may be entering or already crossing the street.
Staying Alert Can Help Keep Halloween Streets Safer
Trick-or-Streets gives New Yorkers more car-free spaces to celebrate Halloween throughout October. At the same time, drivers should remember that the holiday can bring unusual pedestrian activity to streets across the city.
Anyone traveling through New York City during the Halloween season should slow down, watch carefully at intersections and crosswalks, follow temporary traffic restrictions, and give pedestrians adequate space. The New York car accident lawyers from Shulman & Hill offer compassionate legal guidance.
